If you’re on your path to success, you know there are going to be a few setbacks along the way. Don’t let this discourage you. Remember: “a setback is nothing but a setup for a comeback,” as my friend Willie Jolley says. Life isn’t about what happens to you, but how you react to it. Fear and potential failure can knock you down, but it can’t hold you there.
I’ve researched the richest, most successful millionaires in the country and they’ve let me in on what’s kept them going through the tough times for my new book, The Wealth Choice, Success Secrets of Black Millionaires and I’ve learned a thing or two from them.
Here’s what you need to do when you think that you’ve hit a wall:
1. Remain flexible. Setbacks can force you to adapt in ways that you may not have thought were possible. Don’t see this as a problem, but a chance for you to grow.
2. Step out of your comfort zone. I can’t tell you how many students I’ve had come into my office underestimating themselves. Push yourself to adapt, and you’ll find you can achieve all that you dreamed—and so much more.
3. Lean on your network. Nobody can remake themselves completely alone. Don’t be afraid to reach out to people who believe in your dreams. Don’t give into the temptation to lean on friends who may not share your commitment to a better life.
4. Stay positive. Everyone has setbacks. I, myself, have had to stare the ugly face of failure down and overcome. Still, those tough times are what sculpted me into who I am today. If you can overcome failure in your mind, then you can change your breaking point into a turning point to a better life of wealth, success, and happiness.
